If an ER provider wanted to set aside one day a week to provide Medicare Wellness visits for patients at the hospital facility – what would be the POS?

Hi Melanie,

If the physician’s work, although in different locations, is all under the same tax ID umbrella, you or someone at your group should make sure it is being done correctly at the walk-in clinic. If, however, the only commonality is the physician and your clinic and the walk-in clinic are not part of the same organization, you do not need to be concerned.

That being said, if for some reason his work would come under scrutiny by CMS or the OIG, it would not be unusual for them to investigate records and claims from every location where the physician practices.

I work in a rehabilitation center and I’ve got a quick question for you. One of our doctors also works at another location (a walk in clinic). Should we be concerned about anything like this if the codes are being billed correctly here but can’t be accounted for at the other clinic? I guess I’m confused as to whether or not he’d be held accountable for the mistake or if our center would be scrutinized if he used POS codes for the work we do here.

Follow-up…..THANK-YOU, that code worked. Just an FYI, I posted the same question to a medical billing & coding forum. As of today, the question has been viewed 22 times & no one has responded. Makes you really wonder how some folks are billing! Thank-you again for your help.

No, that’s one code I haven’t tried but that sounds like it could be right. It would be great if taxonomy codes & POS had more in common. If they did, maybe just maybe people would have a better chance of billing correctly. Thanks so much for your help! I’ll let you know how things turn out.

Hi,
Does anyone know what the correct place of service would be for a part B provider who is seeing patients in a Community Based Residential Treatment, Mental Retardation and/or Developmental Disabilities-Residential Treatment Facilities? This is the definition of the taxonomy code & it does not match any POS description. Medicare is rejecting POS 11,33,54 & 99.

Hey Sarah-

Some of the examples of a POS 49 that came to my mind were physical therapy facilities and imaging centers- provided of course that they are not part of a hospital facility.

Does anyone else have some good examples of when to use a Place of Service Code 49 for Sarah?
